Desired Character: Charles Gunn
Appears in Angel, Buffy, or both?: Angel
Character description:
Gunn is a very tough individual. Raised in the hard, cold streets of LA, specifically in the Badlands, he's always had to fend for himself. Leader of a street gang of vampire hunters, he had no choice but to do so in order to survive. He not only had himself and his gang to look after, but also his sister Alonna. This lifestyle contributed to some of his major strengths and weaknesses. Firstly, Gunn is extremely brave. He isn't scared of anything, dead or otherwise, and has no problem putting himself out on the line. This can make him sometimes very impulsive and reckless. He is set in his ways and often times likes to kill and fight, then ask questions later. He goes with his first instinct. He's also a very skilled fighter and can handle weapons well. Being a leader requires him to be a smart and strategic thinker, and this quality has gotten him out of a lot of tight spots and has enabled him to survive all those years underground. But most importantly, caring person and loyal. He is always, always there for those he is aligned with, even if its with his street gang or Angel Investigations. If you don't betray him, he won't betray you. If you give him respect, he'll give it back. But he has a tendency to watch over people almost to a fault of himself. He's very sacrificial. He puts himself on the line and takes the load for people, even when it might not be called for. Its what cost his future relationship with Fred.
During his days underground, on the streets, in an unfortunate encounter with a gang of vampires, Alonna was taken and turned into one of them. Gunn was forced to kill her, and the pain from that experience as well as his hardships on the streets are reflected sometimes in his personality. He can come across as very stubborn and intense, but his stubbornness has always been invested in the good fight. He is very much devoted to doing what is right and never giving up. However, his hard upbringing instilled a lot of anger within him. If he doesn't know or trust you, he definitely puts up a wall. He's bluntly honest and let's you know immediately if you've made it on his good or bad side. His words are tinged with punch, even if you only irritate him. He's very mindful of social and racial status, because he's lived in the consequences of it all his life. He will let anyone know of his animosity for those who bask in social privilege, because he has experienced the effects, and certainly harbors bitterness towards those societal flaws.
When Gunn met Angel, he was very reluctant to side with him because he didn't like being "talked down to", first and foremost, and he really didn't like vampires, soul or no soul. However Angel won his respect, giving him perspective on his current situation and showing him that he had a future, and a purpose. This was a concept that was new to Gunn. At first he really had no concept of the future. In his eyes, he didn't have one. It was why he recklessly sold his soul for a truck in his earlier years, a bind that Angel and the gang helped him weasel, or rather, fight his way out of. And through many struggles in determining where his true loyalties rested, he knew he had a home with the Angel gang eventually, and he knew he couldn't always do everything alone.
This was probably what allowed him to fall in love with Fred Burkle. After all, underneath all of the urban toughness he's very cool and laid-back, and very friendly and caring (to a fault), once you earn his trust. It is simply a habit of his upbringing. It is the reason why if doesn't feel useful or as if he has real purpose in a cause, he can get very insecure. He was the leader of a vampire-fighting gang for years and always had a pseudo family who ran to him. He took care of his little sister all of his life. When he is stripped of that security, the security of being "needed", he gets defensive and hurt. So out of instinct, he killed the professor that sent Fred into Pylea, wanting to carry that burden, when Fred felt it was hers to bare. This caused them to become separated, even though they still cared about each other deeply after their relationship ended.
When Angel Investigations moved to Wolfram & Hart, Gunn found an enticing sense of purpose, rather than just being a muscle or a sidekick. The firm had all the knowledge any superpower lawyer could have on the law and implanted it into his brain. But in order to keep it, there was a price. Unknowingly to him, that price was Fred. Guilt ridden, he decided to switch places with Lindsay in a dimension of Hell but eventually was rescued. When the big apocalypse comes upon him and the Angel team, he decides to return to his roots, trading the suit and tie for the hoodie and jeans, to what he was familiar with--being in battle and fighting the good fight face to face, fist to fist.
Classification: Normal
Strengths: Great fighter, brave, and he's a leader

Good or Evil?: Good
RP Sample:
(I'll post two...the first one is "Wolfram & Hart"-ish, and the second is more old school Gunn...both samples are from other sites)
Number ONE-
Lunch at 12pm. Meeting with a client at 1pm. Meeting with Angel at 2pm. Case starts at 4pm. I am on this, Gunn thought hurrying with quickness in his step down the large grand staircase leading to the main floor of Wolfram & Hart. Fax sent? Check. Survived apocalypse? Check.
After almost dying...again...by a swarm of vamps, flying dragons and L. A. being sucked into what could only be described as Hell, he had to admit, he was feeling pretty damn good as of late. As far as he was concerned, he deserved to finally feel content. He was deep in the good fight, getting things done, taking evil and decking them out one fang, one horn, and one other creepy non-human appendage at a time.
And he was looking pretty fly while doing it, if he could say so himself.
Decked out in a dark gray suit, Gunn straightened his tie as his leather shoes walked across the shiny tiled floor. Off to lunch, about to get his grub on. Reuben sandwich, here we come...
Yeah. Right.
Who the hell was he kidding? As of late, ever since Wolfram & Hart planted this knowledge in his head, even after trying to separate himself from this...inherent evil attached to his brain for the big apocalyptic fight, he tried shutting everything out. He tried telling himself that everything was all better, that he didn't sacrifice Fred's life for something he can't get out of his head. If he even thought about it, it would make him sick to his stomach. So he resolved to try not to. He helped save the world, or what's left of it (as the city was still in chaos), that was enough right?
No. It's never enough. Gunn knew that. Never enough for Fred's life.
Suddenly, as he was walking, completely involved in his thoughts, a blonde woman stepped up to him and started yelling in his face.
Whoa, a woman scorned, Gunn thought, looking at her, an eyebrow raised. She's not that bad looking, for real...but she's scorned nonetheless. What is this chick on about?
"Yoooo, wait a minute. Just wait," he said. "First, the yelling-in-my face plan? Not happenin'. Not the best way to get what you want. Second, what the hell are you talking about? And third, maybe we should start over. Hi, my name is Gunn, what's yours? Can I help you with somethin'?" He said the last two questions with more of an attitude than sincerity.
NUMBER TWO-
Gunn sat on the couch at the Hyperion Hotel, twirling a stake around in his hand. He wasn't feeling very talkative at the moment, despite the fact that there were new people in the building--slayers, all in on the fight. Apparently they were the "new council". He's met some of them before, but most of them he was unfamiliar with, and it wasn't making his current mood any cheerier. Maybe it was the nearly dying part of his day. Yeah, that's probably it. All of that coupled with the immense pain. Big factor.
And now, even with the extra help, even with the being-alive part, the city was in chaos. As he sat there, watching the stake twirl in between his fingers, his mind drifted to just a few hours ago, when he was so sure he was going to die in this battle. Yet here he was, sitting down, breathing. Others weren't so lucky. Others won't be so lucky. The thought pissed him off. There's no way he and everyone else from Angel Investigations could survive an apocalypse for no reason....
...well, maybe for Angel it was more than just one apocalypse in his lifetime....
Whatever. Still, the city was now sucked into what could only be described as Hell, and what was he doing now? Sitting in a spell-protected bubble twirling a stake.
For real?
All hell is breaking loose outside and that's what the big bad champions and this new 'council' are on?
He didn't care if he wasn't strong enough to fight yet, given his injuries. They didn't have time to just sit around. If they were able to survive the first round, then they must be doing something right. Too late to stop now.
He finally stood up, ignoring the pain and said to who ever was listening, "Okay ya'll, I'm about tired of sittin' around waitin' for the sun to come out. 'Cause guess what? It ain't happenin'. We need to be out there. We ain't got time to be checkin' books and cross referencin'. It's chaos out there, man, and it's not gonna wait for us before it kills everything in sight."
