Rain grinned at Cordelia. She remembered the pretty brunette from their little visit to the demon dimention of Pylea a while back, but that was all she remembered of her. That whole trip to Pylea had been too rushed. Those around her hadn’t been too keen on sticking around, not that she blamed them. Pylea had been…weird; weird and freaky and none too pleasant.
Rain listened as Gunn argued that they should open the presents from the lawyers at Wolfram & Hart; she also listened with a bland face to their opinion of Lilah Morgan. Secretly she wondered if she should tell her new friends the extent of her relationship to the lawyer. How it had been Lilah Morgan who had gotten Rain the insurance she needed to pay for her hospital treatment. How Lilah Morgan had made sure that she was treated by doctors that specialized in cases like hers.
But that probably wasn’t what the thing to tell her companions, especially when Gunn called Lilah Morgan the devil’s representative on Earth. Instead, she watched as Gunn, who seemed pretty excited, ripped the paper wrapping off his present to find a white box inside of which was a dagger. Rain could see that the blade was expertly made and obviously expensive. Gunn’s face lit up like a Christmas tree. He gleefully showed them the blade and Rain had to laugh at his resemblance to a small child.
Curiousity getting the better of her, Rain walked over to the table full of present being careful to give Gunn and his new toy a wide berth, and picked up the small rectangular present addressed to her. Rain tested the wait and found it to be slightly heavy. Rain eagerly ripped into the wrapping paper, throwing it off to reveal a leather-bound book. There was no title and it looked to be quite old. She flipped through its worn pages until she came to a faded picture of a woman wearing an old fashioned dress. Her long black hair flowed down her back, her eyes were a piercing green. Clutching the woman’s skirts was a little girl, as beautiful as her mother but with brown-black hair and blue-green eyes. The caption for the picture read: Riak, leader of the Irish wolf demon clan, and her daughter Rain.
“Oh my Lord,” she breathed, staring at picture with tears slowly coming to her eyes.

Angel didn't know what to say when Gunn opened his present. He internally braced himself for some portal to open or a rift in time suck them into a hell dimension. But none of that happened. Instead, Gunn received an impressive dagger that someone must've went to all corners of the earth to get.
It was pretty impressive. As Gunn showed it off, he...almost...wished he had one just like it for himself.
Next was Rain, who he was most worried about. This whole W&H fiasco aside, he really wanted to take her aside and talk with her. About how he thinks he killed her back in his evil days? Well....not exactly. But he needed to talk to her about getting her memory back. He wanted to help her. Maybe it was some sort of inner guilt. In fact, it was no question. There was no telling what was buried in her memories...maybe some memories about Angelus that needed to stay buried. But if he did do wrong to her, Angel owed her at least his effort to help. At the very, very least.
"Rain..." He uttered. "Careful," He said pathetically, knowing no one would listen. He waited for Rain's reaction. She took a breath and it looked as if she was tearing up. By instinct, Angel hastily went to her, alarmed.
"See? I told you we couldn't trust them," He told everyone at large. "What is it?" He asked Rain, as he looked over her shoulder, expecting to see something horrific.
Looking at the picture and reading the caption, Angel shrugged, taking what would be considered a deep breath of relief, if he needed to breathe.
"Oh," He looked up at Gunn and Cordelia, slightly embarrassed. "Oh um...you look a lot like your mom,"
He lowered his gaze and walked away from what he thought was impending horrors, rubbing the back of his neck. He looked up at her again and asked gently, "Do you remember anything?"

Cordelia smiled back at Gunn, glad that if Angel would go off at her for not supporting him, Gunn would be there for support. But luckily, that didn't happen. She watched in silence as Gunn picked up his gift, testing it and she found herself holding her breath, even though she'd convinced herself ALL the presents couldn't be bad, at least.
When Gunn asked Angel if he should be the first to unwrap one, Cordelia did her best to avoid looking at him. She hated disappointing her boss, the guy who had taken her in and given her a job, making her life that much better. It seemed to take only a second as Gunn ripped into his present and Cordelia gasped, spotting what was inside. "Wow, that's something alright." She commented, obvious awe in her tone.
Cordelia then turned her gaze away from the dagger and to Rain, who was now unwrapping hers. After breathing some words, she noticed Rain seemed upset by her gift. "Oh no..." Cordelia whispered, bracing herself for the worst. Maybe Angel was right... she thought with concern. But what could a book hold that would cause that reaction? Then when Angel glanced to both her and Gunn, embarrassed, she couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at him.
"Quick enough to jump to conclusions there, Mr Worrywart?" She asked him with sarcasm, then realised since both Gunn and Rain had opened their presents, it must be her turn. With a large, giddy smile, Cordelia almost pranced over to the table and picked up the gift with her name on it. With curiousity, Cordelia tore the paper off and shrieked.
"Oh.My.God." She exclaimed loudly, pulling a heap of beautiful sweaters and tops out to inspect them even more. By the look of them, they each would have cost more than her entire wardrobe. The brand on the clothes, she'd seen before but never, ever even thought of purchasing. Of course, she'd tried on clothes with the same brand, dreaming that one day she'd be rich enough to buy just one. "This is great!" Cordelia again announced, beaming.
But something else caught her eye in the box the clothes had been in. With wide eyes, Cordelia pulled out a pearl necklace, her eyes as wide as saucers. "No way." She protested, knowing damn well this was the real thing. After a moment of running her hands over the pearls, she put it around her neck, clasped it closed, then continued to hold it in her hand. She looked up with tears of pure joy in her eyes and added in a child-like manner, "This is the best Christmas ever!"

"Oh um...you look a lot like your mom. Do you remember anything?"
Rain looked at Angel with a weak smile. “Thank you,” she said. “No, I don’t remember anything.” She almost laughed at the irony: she knew more about this vampire next her than her own mother. Rain touched the picture gently, like she was afraid it would rub away if she touched it, and she was—a little.
Gazing down at the picture of her mother she tried to remember anything, anything at all of the imperiously beautiful woman looking back up at her from the page. Riak’s dress was simple, forest green in color, and looked to be from the early 17th century for late 16th century. Her eyes were emerald and fierce, her features strong, definitely the face of a leader.
Rain was torn away from her precious book by a loud squeal of delight from Cordelia. She looked up and saw the brunette exclaiming excitedly about her present which seemed to be a whole wardrobe of designer clothes. Although Rain herself couldn’t see the point of owning clothes you were afraid to get dirty, Cordelia seemed positively thrilled.
Clutching her book to her chest she brushed away the lone tear that had managed to escape her eyes and went over to examine Cordelia’s new attire. “Wow,” she said catching site of the label. “This is some high-end fashion.”
After going over Cordelia’s present for several minutes she turned to Angel. “Ok, big guy,” she teased. “Now that we’ve all opened our presents and seen that there is nothing scary about them, it’s time for you to open yours!”

Angel watched as Cordelia marveled at her gifts, which were, admittedly quite impressive. What was more impressive was what Rain pointed out. Nothing happened. He gave a slight smile at Cordelia's...as over-dramatic as it might have been...joy. He was glad at the very least that everyone was safe and happy.
"It looks great on you Cordy," Angel commented, for what it was worth.
Maybe this holiday wouldn't turn out so bad after all.
Wait. He spoke too soon. Rain reminded him that his present remained unopened.
Despite the fact that the other unveilings were without tragedy, the last thing Angel wanted to do was open a present from Lilah. But to satisfy his friends, he reluctantly took his present.
"And the moment of truth. Shouldn't we have a drum roll or somethin?" Gunn commented. He smiled, not hiding his genuine excitement. Angel, on the otherhand, made sure he didn't hide his personal unenthusiasm.
Angel ripped open the paper to reveal a white box. Angel open the lid, throwing it on the ground. What was inside made Angel's expression change almost immediately. His brow dropped, and eyes narrowing.
"Hey, hey what is it? Don't hold out on us, Gunn said. Angel sighed heavily and lifted the box's contents out for everyone to see.
"A mirror." He announced, lifting the ebony framed glass from the box, and throwing the box to the ground. He placed it on the counter and said sarcastically, "Remind me to send Lilah a thank you card. I guess thats what thinks reflects who I really am. Clever."
He couldn't help but feel quite insulted, yet Angel recognized that he had no reason to be surprised.

"...a mirror," Gunn repeated. Huh. Well that spoiled all the 'happy'. "Hold up, a mirror?"
Gunn was at a lost of what to say. Knowing Wolfram & Hart, it wasn't surprising that they would somehow get their punchline in. At least the thing wasn't attacking them.
"Shoot. Don't worry about it. They gotta get their kicks in somehow." Gunn reassured. He gave Angel a friendly slap the back. "Come on, I'll let you play with this." He said, holding up the knife.
Angel just glared at him and Gunn laughed a bit, quite used to the glare. "...well look on the bright side, it's kind of a nice mirror." He said with a shrug.

Cordelia broke out of her reverie and dropped the necklace, satisfied in feeling the weight of the pearls against her chest, after Rain came over to have a look. She grinned at the other woman, nodding her head in agreement when she read the label on the clothes. "I still can't believe it..." She trailed off, hearing Rain's next comment about it being Angel's turn.
"She's right... come on, don't leave us in suspense!" Her wide smile dropped however, when Angel said what his present was. Cordelia had to look at the mirror for a while after actually believing him. After Gunn's, Rain's and her fabulous presents, she was quite surprised that Angel had received a mirror, of all things. Cordelia's expression turned sympathetic after his obvious dejected tone. "Gunn's right, Angel. Don't think anymore of it." She offered him a small smile, then laughed after Gunn said Angel could share his dagger.
"I would say the same, but I don't think you'd like to share mine." Cordelia tried to lighten the mood with her attempt of a joke, but she didn't think it would exactly work.

Rain watched expectantly as Angel slowly unwrapped his present. When she saw what it was she had to put her hand over her mouth to stifle her giggle. In truth, Angel getting a mirror as a present wasn’t all that funny. It was actually down right mean, but she couldn’t help herself. After all his trepidation over the presents and his insistence that Lilah Morgan was the spawn of Lucifer, Angel getting something as simple and innocent as a mirror was comical. It didn’t help that Cordelia joked that she would share her designer clothes with Angel if he were her size. The image of the large, dark and brooding vampire dressed in Cordelia’s clothes made the laughter she’d been holding back surge up and burst from her lips.
She laughed for several second before noticing the strange looks her companions were giving. “Sorry,” she laughed guiltily. “It’s just,” she cracked a grin, “I had this picture of Angel dressed like Cordelia.” Turning her head to look at the pale vampire she said, “Hate to say it my friend but capris, crop-tops and platform sandals are not the best look for you.”
Turning to everyone else she asked, “So are we pleased with our wonderful present? I know I am. Look at this!” Rain flipped the book open to a random page and began to read. “In the beginning of time all was great, peaceful and beautiful. But then a terrible being entered our universe. It laid waste to our world, ruling the land with an iron fist and cold cruelty.
“The Lord saw this and knew he must stop this being. He sent a savior into our world to battle the terrible one. The savior came and defeated it. But before it was thrown from our universe the terrible being cast a curse upon us. Fire will consume all,” it said, and all will be consumed by essence."
Rain looked up from her book and frowned. “Why does that ring of prophecy?” she asked worriedly. Personally she didn’t heed the warning of stories like the one she had just read. But something about that last line scared her. As she had read it aloud her fingertips had tingled and her tongue felt thick and the sour aftertaste of strong magic lingered in her mouth. Gunn had this silly grin on his face , amused at this really peculiar moment. What a day this was turning out to be. His attention turned to Rain as she tried to contain her laughter, which only made Gunn want to laugh. But he caught eye contact with Angel, who gave him a too-scary-for-comfort death glare, so he cleared his throat instead...an attempt to remain composed.
Luckily, Rain changed the subject.
Good job, girl. Real smooth, Gunn thought.
He listened with interest however, as Rain read from her book. The tone of the piece quickly started to get scarier and scarier, but Gunn wanted to brush it off as typical ancient-writing mumbo jumbo. "Yeah, like we need any more fire and brimstone around here," Gunn commented, rolling his eyes. Suddenly, when he looked back at Rain, he noticed the back of the book binding started to catch on fire.
"Rain!" He shouted. "Fire!" He looked down and a ring of fire started to form around her feet.
"Damn, they weren't speaking figuratively..." Gunn put the dagger on the counter, and ran to get the fire extinguisher. "Help her get the flames out!" he shouted as he ran. The flames seemed to have a mind of its own, wanting to consume one person in particular...Rain.

Rain hissed and dropped the book. White hot pain flared up her legs and she looked down to see fire crackling hungrily at her feet. A ribbon of flame jumped to her pant leg, burning through the material to reach the skin underneath. Rain screamed. The pain was unbearable. This was not normal fire. Rain knew she touched fire before. She could hold her hand in a flame and not feel any pain at all. She would burn but the pain would never come.
Rain desperately ripped at her jeans with nails that had lengthened to razor-edge claws. Her blue-green eyes had widened in panic. Finally she freed herself and scrambled away from the flames. The fire grabbed at her, trying to keep its prisoner but she as fast as she could away from its hungry orange fangs, taking refuge under the counter where she sat staring as the fire consumed her clothes.
Images flashed past her eyes as she stared at the flames. Men and women, all dressed in colonial style, grinned up at her their teach yellow and black in rotting gums. A man in black read her sentence proclaiming her to be a witch. Slowly he brought a lit torch down to the straw and kindling placed around her feet. Rain tried desperately to escape—to run—but her arms were tied behind her back, securely fastened to a stake. Smoke drifted up, spiraling around her small form. Rain was scared. This was the first trip she’d taken without her mother to America. She was supposed to be representing The Pack and these humans had caught her shape-shifting.
A tear ran down Rain’s face. The fire that tried to eat her just now faded leaving nothing but a pile of ash, a pair of crispy jeans, and scorch marks on the floor. Rain looked up at her new friends from her position curled up on the floor under the counter. “That wasn’t normal fire,” she said quietly. “That was hellfire.”
